What Is a Lab-Grown Diamond?
A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond. Not a simulant, not a fake — a genuine diamond, grown in a controlled environment using one of two processes: High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) or Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD). Both methods recreate the conditions under which natural diamonds form, resulting in a stone that is chemically, physically, and optically identical to one pulled from the earth.
A gemologist cannot tell the difference with the naked eye. Even under magnification, the distinction requires specialized equipment. The Federal Trade Commission agrees: since 2018, lab-grown diamonds are officially classified as diamonds, full stop.
What Is a Natural Diamond?
A natural diamond formed billions of years ago under immense heat and pressure deep within the earth, then made its way to the surface through volcanic activity. Each one is unique — the inclusions, the growth patterns, the journey — and that geological history is a significant part of what gives natural diamonds their enduring appeal and their price.
Natural diamonds are mined, certified, and graded by independent laboratories like GIA and IGI. Their supply is finite, which contributes to their value over time.
How Are They Different?
The differences come down to four things: origin, price, resale value, and environmental footprint.
Origin
One took billions of years and formed miles underground. The other took weeks in a laboratory. For some buyers, that origin story matters deeply — it's part of what makes a natural diamond feel meaningful. For others, the stone itself is what matters, not where it came from. Both are completely valid perspectives.
Price
This is where lab-grown diamonds change the game. Lab diamonds typically cost 50–70% less than natural diamonds of equivalent size and quality. In practical terms, a budget that buys a 1-carat natural diamond could buy a 2-carat lab diamond with similar color and clarity grades. That's a significant difference.
Resale Value
Natural diamonds hold resale value better over time. They're rarer, and the secondary market for them is well-established. Lab-grown diamonds have seen their prices drop substantially as production has scaled — a 2-carat lab diamond that cost $8,000 three years ago might sell for significantly less today. If long-term investment value matters to you, natural diamonds have the stronger track record.
That said, most people don't resell their engagement rings. If you're buying for the beauty, the symbolism, and the experience of wearing it — resale value may not be a deciding factor at all.
Environmental Impact

Yes. Lab-grown diamonds are graded using the exact same 4 Cs — cut, color, clarity, and carat weight — by the same independent labs (GIA, IGI) that certify natural diamonds.
