Cut – The Sparkle Factor

A diamond’s cut is the most defining factor of its beauty. Cut is not about shape (round, oval, cushion, etc.), but about how well the diamond is proportioned, polished, and faceted to reflect light.

• Grades: Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, Excellent

• Recommendation: Always prioritize Excellent Cut. A diamond with a superb cut will appear more brilliant and lively, even if it’s smaller in size.

Color – From Dazzlingly White to Warm Tones

Diamonds are graded on a color scale from D (colorless) to Z (noticeable yellow or brown tint).

• D–F: Colorless, the rarest and most sought-after

• G–J: Near Colorless, a beautiful balance of value and quality

• K–Z: Noticeable warmth

At Diamond Tales, we recommend aiming for near-colorless to colorless diamonds (D–H range) to achieve a timeless brilliance that pairs with any setting.

Carat Weight – Size and Presence

Carat measures a diamond’s weight, not its visual size. 1 carat = 200 milligrams, which is roughly a 6.5mm round brilliant.

What makes carat fascinating is its exponential pricing: a 2.00ct diamond is much rarer (and disproportionately more valuable) than two 1.00ct stones.

Clarity – Nature’s Fingerprint

Clarity evaluates the presence of inclusions (internal) and blemishes (external) in a diamond. Grades range from:

• Flawless (FL) & Internally Flawless (IF) – No inclusions visible under 10x magnification

• VVS (Very, Very Slightly Included) – Minute inclusions, extremely hard to see

• VS (Very Slightly Included) – Small inclusions, not visible without magnification

• SI (Slightly Included) – Inclusions visible under magnification, but often “eye-clean”

• I (Included) – Noticeable inclusions, sometimes visible to the naked eye

Our professional advice: prioritize cut and color over clarity. An eye-clean VS or SI diamond with excellent cut will look stunning and offer exceptional value.
