The Diamond Tales Engagement Ring Guide — Everything You Need to Know Before You Buy
Welcome — I'm Constanza
I've helped hundreds of couples in Miami find the ring that starts their forever — and I've answered the same questions over and over in my consultations. So I wrote them all down.
This guide covers everything: the 4Cs, what they actually mean in practice, natural vs lab grown diamonds, and the questions you should ask any jeweler before you spend a single dollar. Read it before you buy anything.
The 4Cs — What They Really Mean
Cut
Cut is the most important of the 4Cs. It determines how much light your diamond returns to your eye — which is what makes a diamond look alive. A well-cut diamond in any carat weight will outshine a poorly cut stone twice its size. Never compromise on cut.
What to look for: Excellent or Very Good cut grade on a GIA certificate.
Color
Diamond color is graded D (colorless) to Z (light yellow). The difference between D and G is nearly invisible to the naked eye — but very significant in price. G or H is the sweet spot: faces up white, costs significantly less.
What to look for: G-H for white gold or platinum. H-I for yellow gold, which masks any warmth in the stone.
Clarity
Clarity refers to inclusions (internal) and blemishes (external). Most inclusions are invisible to the naked eye. VS2 or SI1 typically looks perfectly clean face-up — and costs far less than Flawless.
What to look for: VS2 or SI1 for best value. Always ask to see the stone before deciding.
Carat
Carat is weight, not size. A well-cut 0.90ct can look larger than a poorly cut 1.10ct stone. Don't chase round numbers. Chase a great cut at a carat weight that works for your budget.
Natural vs Lab Grown — The Honest Answer
Lab grown diamonds are real diamonds — same chemical structure, same brilliance, same forever. Natural diamonds hold their value better over time. Lab grown cost 60-80% less, meaning more stone for the same budget.
