One design, two stones, and each in the metal that serves it.

The silhouette is the most classic arrangement in colored stone jewelry: an oval center framed by a halo of natural diamonds. It endures because the optics are sound. A ring of colorless diamonds raises the perceived saturation of whatever sits inside it, the same way a white mat makes a photograph read richer.

On the sapphire

Blue sapphire is corundum colored by iron and titanium, and its blue is easily influenced by what surrounds it. Warm metal reflects into the pavilion and pushes the color greener and softer. A cool white setting keeps the blue reading true and slightly deeper. Sapphire is also a 9 on Mohs with no cleavage plane — one of the very few colored stones I recommend for an everyday earring without a caveat.

On the Colombian emerald

Origin matters more in emerald than in almost any other gemstone, and Colombia is the reference standard. The Muzo, Chivor and Coscuez deposits sit in sedimentary rock rather than the metamorphic settings that produce most of the world’s emerald, and that difference in geology shows in the stone. Colombian material tends to carry a purer, slightly warmer green with less of the bluish or grey cast common to other origins, because it typically contains less iron.

Yellow gold is the right metal for it. Green and gold are neighbors in warmth, and gold lifts an emerald’s color in a way white metal cannot — in a cool setting emerald often reads slightly grey and flat.

Emerald is beryl colored by chromium or vanadium, and nearly every natural stone carries a jardin — the internal garden of fissures the trade accepts as proof of origin rather than as a fault. Those inclusions make it behave differently from sapphire: 7.5 to 8 on Mohs, respectably hard, but hardness and toughness are separate properties and emerald’s toughness is only fair. In a stud, protected by a halo and sitting flat against the lobe, it is well placed.

Oval is the shape that gives you the most visible stone for the weight — wider through the face than a round of the same carat.

Care

Nearly all emeralds are oil- or resin-treated to fill surface-reaching fissures. Standard, disclosed, and permanent enough for normal wear — but no ultrasonic cleaner, no steam, no hot water. Warm soapy water and a soft brush. The sapphire version needs none of this.
