Thirty-six blue sapphires across 0.26 carats. That is about seven thousandths of a carat per stone — roughly a millimeter each.

Here is the part most people never hear: melee sapphire at that size is harder to source than melee diamond, and more expensive per carat than its weight suggests. With diamonds you are matching colorlessness, which is a narrow target but a familiar one. With blue sapphire you are matching a color, and blue sapphire varies wildly — steel, inky, violet, greenish, pale. Finding thirty-six that agree at a millimeter across, where you cannot recut or adjust anything, means sorting through a great many to keep a few.

The design puts them where they earn it. Sapphire carries color but very little brilliance at this scale; diamond carries brilliance. So the sapphires trace the wing pattern and the eighty-six diamonds do the sparkling around them. Reverse those roles and the piece would read washed out.

Two butterflies per ear, at slightly different sizes, which is what gives the design its sense of motion — a single symmetrical butterfly reads static and a bit literal. The offset pair reads like something caught mid-flight.

White gold throughout. Blue sapphire is easily dulled by warm metal reflecting into it; a cool setting keeps the blue true and lets the diamonds stay icy.

Both stones are near the top of the hardness scale — sapphire at 9, diamond at 10 — so despite the delicacy of the design, there is nothing fragile in it
