Emerald green is the hardest color to get right in a small stone, because the smaller the emerald the more the color tends to wash out toward pale. Setting 68 of them together solves that: massed side by side in two-tone 14k gold, they hold a single deep green across the whole surface, punctuated by 34 round diamonds.

Emerald is beryl colored by chromium and vanadium, and it is the only one of the three classic colored stones — ruby, sapphire, emerald — that asks for a little care. At 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale it is hard, but its natural inclusions make it more brittle than corundum. Clean with warm water and mild soap, never an ultrasonic, and it will outlive all of us.
