Feather motifs are difficult to render in gold without looking heavy. The trick is the articulation: the sections have to flex independently so the shape reads as something organic rather than a solid plate. That construction is also what carries almost a full carat of diamonds without weighing on the lobe.

18k gold is 75% pure, against 58.5% for 14k, which gives it a deeper, warmer yellow. Against that richer gold, colorless melee reads brighter by contrast — a deliberate choice, and the right one for this design.
