14k yellow gold. 2 marquise-cut natural blue sapphires, 0.28 ctw. Size 4.5, adjustable. Handcrafted in the USA.

A spring ring is built on an open shank rather than a closed circle. The two ends pass each other instead of meeting, which lets the band flex slightly to fit — and gives the design its shape, with the two marquise sapphires sitting at the tips where the ends cross.

That open construction solves the problem that ruins most ring gifts: not knowing the size. It also solves a subtler one. Fingers change through a day and through a year — heat, salt, altitude, hormones all move them by up to half a size. A closed band is right at one moment and tight or loose at others. This one adjusts with you.

It suits a pinky or an index finger as easily as a ring finger, and it stacks well because the open shank sits flatter against a neighboring band than a full round shank does.

The marquise cut earns its place here. It is the most efficient shape in jewelry for making a stone look larger than it weighs — the same carat spread across a long silhouette rather than a compact one — which is why 0.28 carats reads as considerably more presence than that number suggests. The two points face outward along the line of the finger, which lengthens the hand.

Blue sapphire is corundum: a 9 on Mohs, no cleavage plane, no special handling. For a ring, which takes more abuse than any other piece of jewelry you own, that hardness is not a luxury. It is the reason this piece will look the same in ten years.
