A carved mother of pearl medal, 16 millimeters across, set in 14k yellow gold and ringed with eight round diamonds. Mother of pearl is nacre, the layered material a mollusk secretes to line its shell and to form pearls. Those layers are what create the iridescence: light enters, bounces between them, and comes back out separated into color. It is the same optical effect in a soap bubble, made permanent in an organic material.

Because nacre is soft — 2.5 to 4.5 on the Mohs scale against the diamonds' 10 — keep this one away from perfume, hairspray, chlorine, and ultrasonic cleaning. Wipe it with a soft dry cloth and it will stay luminous for generations.
