Our Lady of Mount Carmel, carved into a 16 millimeter mother of pearl disc and framed in 14k yellow gold with eight natural rubies around the border. It is the kind of piece that gets given at a baptism and worn at a wedding forty years later.

Mother of pearl is nacre — the same iridescent material the mollusk lays down to build a pearl, deposited in microscopic layers that split light into that shifting rainbow sheen. Because it is organic and every shell is different, no two carvings are identical. Small variations in the surface are the signature of a natural material, not an imperfection.

The rubies do the work of framing: eight points of deep red around a pale, luminous center. Ruby is corundum at 9 on the Mohs scale, so the border is the durable part; the nacre is softer at 2.5 to 4.5, which means keeping this piece away from perfume, chlorine, and ultrasonic cleaners.
