If you only know one thing about tsavorite, know this: it is rarer than emerald, and almost nobody is selling it to you. A green grossular garnet, first found in the Tsavo region of Kenya in the late 1960s, it comes out of the ground in a green so electric that people routinely mistake it for a treated stone. It isn't. Tsavorite is one of the very few gemstones that reaches the market with no enhancement at all.

This one is an oval of 0.76 carats, set in 14k yellow gold with a single 0.04 carat diamond above it. Because garnet has a higher refractive index than emerald, tsavorite returns more light — it is a livelier stone in every lighting condition, and noticeably so at dinner.

It is also harder to source than emerald in clean material above half a carat, which is why you see so little of it. When one comes through at this quality, I take it.
