Five pear emeralds per ear, set flat against the lobe with eighty-six small diamonds filling the space between them.

The pairing works because emerald and diamond handle light in completely different ways, and the design uses that rather than fighting it. Diamond has a refractive index of 2.42 — the highest of any common gem — which is why it throws sharp, hard flashes. Emerald sits at about 1.57, closer to glass. Light passes through it more gently and comes back soft and saturated rather than brilliant.

Put them side by side and you get two different textures of light in one earring: the emeralds glowing, the diamonds sparking. A cluster of all one or all the other would read flat by comparison.

Ten pear emeralds also means ten stones that have to agree. Emerald green varies enormously by deposit and even within a single crystal, and in a cluster where stones sit millimeters apart there is nowhere for a mismatch to hide. That matching is most of what you are paying for, more than the carat weight.

Eighteen karat yellow gold is right for emerald. Green and gold are neighbors in warmth, and the metal lifts the color; in a cool white setting emerald often reads slightly grey.

Care

Nearly all emeralds are oil- or resin-treated to fill surface-reaching fissures. Standard, disclosed, and stable in normal wear — but no ultrasonic cleaner, no steam, no hot water. Warm soapy water and a soft brush, and store them separately from harder stones.
